What is AWS RDS Proxy?

AWS Relational Database Service (RDS) is a managed database service that was established about a decade ago. Over the previous ten years, application patterns have evolved, posing a variety of issues when communicating with the database:

  • Applications, particularly serverless applications, have a high number of open database connections. RDS only allows for a limited amount of open connections.

  • Custom failure handling code can be difficult to manage and error prone. Handling database failovers is one example of handling failures.

How does RDS proxy work?

Connection Pooling

Connection pooling is an optimization that allows programs to share and reuse database connections, decreasing the burden on the database itself. Opening and ending a new database connection consumes CPU resources, and each open connection requires extra RAM. Connection pooling eliminates the need to worry about database connections in application code.

Each database transaction uses a single underlying database connection, which can be reused once the transaction is complete. This transaction-level reuse is known as connection multiplexing (or connection reuse).

Pinning

In rare cases, an RDS proxy cannot safely reuse a database connection outside of its current session. In such cases, the same connection is used throughout the session until it terminates. This process is often referred to as pinning.

AWS recommends avoiding pinning as much as possible because it makes it difficult to share connections, reducing the benefits of utilizing an RDS proxy.

Some reasons why a link could be pinned are:

  • Change in session variable

  • Change of configuration parameter.

Features of AWS RDS Proxy

Upgraded Scalability: RDS Proxy helps maintain steady performance through managing and scaling connections for applications. As a result, it's easier to handle a large number of continuous connections without losing stability.

Increased Security: RDS Proxy’s easy integration with AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and AWS Secrets Manager makes it possible to avoid any kind of challenge with the security credentials by supporting secure handling of the credentials and authentication. A standard approach is to never hardcode sensitive data but to store such information in the secret manager or pass it through environment variables in the deployment process.

Automatic Failover: In the event of a database failover, RDS Proxy takes the backup database instance without the need to interrupt the application, therefore enabling the system to survive that period.

Compatibility: RDS Proxy is compatible with MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MariaDB, which makes it a flexible option for a range of database engines used with AWS RDS and Aurora.

What are the challenges without Amazon RDS Proxy

Amazon RDS includes a specific set of database connections. The maximum number of parallel database connections varies depending on the DB engine type and RAM allocation for the DB instance. Amazon RDS has the following issues when dealing with database connections:

  • The database's performance suffers as a result of managing multiple application connections.

  • RDS has limited database connections. You can receive the "Too Many Connections" problem.

  • Database connections are frequently opened and closed.

What are the benefits of Amazon RDS proxy?

  • It is a fully managed and highly available database proxy for RDS that improves scalability, database resilience, and application security.

  • Amazon RDS Proxy decreases application disruption caused by outages that impair your database's availability by automatically establishing connections to a replacement database instance while keeping existing connections. During a failover, Amazon RDS Proxy directs queries to the replacement database instance. As a result, failover times for the Aurora and RDS databases can be reduced by up to 66%.

  • It improves database efficiency and scalability by allowing programs to pool and share database connections.

  • It is completely compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL.

  • Furthermore, it enables users to maintain predictable database performance by limiting the number of open database connections.

  • It is completely serverless and automatically adjusts to the workload.

  • It allows you to use AWS IAM authentication with databases and securely store credentials in AWS Secrets Manager.

Limitations of Amazon RDS Proxy

  • Even though the database instance is public, the Amazon RDS Proxy is not.

  • Amazon RDS Proxy is only compatible with RDS clusters/instances, not self-managed databases built on EC2 instances.

  • Amazon RDS Proxy supports Aurora Serverless V2, but not Aurora Serverless V1.

  • An Amazon RDS Proxy can only be paired with one database instance.

  • Amazon RDS Proxy does not yet support the Aurora global database.

  • Amazon RDS Proxy cannot be used in a VPC with a dedicated tenancy.

  • You cannot utilize Amazon RDS Proxy with the cluster's custom DNS.

Why use Amazon RDS Proxy ?

Performance Optimisation

Traditional applications regularly open and shut database connections, which increases the stress on the database and causes excessive latency. By keeping a pool of open connections that can be reused, RDS Proxy helps in reducing this by drastically reducing connection overhead and speeding up application response times.

Cost Efficiency

RDS Proxy can help in lowering the operational costs related to maintaining and growing databases by minimizing the amount of open connections and maximizing resource utilization. This is particularly helpful for applications whose activity varies, as it would be inefficient and expensive to keep a lot of connections open all the time.

Enhanced Security Posture

In every cloud system, security is important. Database credential management is guaranteed through RDS Proxy's interface with IAM and Secrets Manager. This improves the overall security posture of your application by lowering the possibility of credential leaks and simplifying the credential rotation process.

Conclusion

One of the AWS cloud tools that are currently most used for controlling database interactions is RDS Proxy. It introduces better application security and scalability through easier connection management. It is also easily integrated with the AWS ecosystem to provide monitoring and optimization functions that are of super use to you. The processes that you follow to set up and manage the AWS RDS Proxy are those that are given in this blog. These are certain that you get a reliable, secure and high performing database design. Never forget that the real trick of success in using AWS RDS Proxy is to be alert and change the applications when the requirements and traffic patterns change. To take full advantage of your cloud database management possibilities, you should use this sophisticated AWS solution.
